University of West Florida (UWF) Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice is offering a 2-week program in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. Hosted by Edinburgh Napier University, this program includes participation by Florida Atlantic University’s School of Criminology and Criminal Justice and Washburn University Department of Criminal Justice. The purpose of this program is to provide students with an opportunity to study cross-national crime and justice policies and issues, compare structures and functions of the criminal justice institutions which are responsible for the enforcement and adjudication of the criminal laws in Scotland and the United States, and to develop a better understanding of the cross-cultural significance of ethnicity, age, and gender in criminal justice. While in Scotland, students will study the relationship between Scottish culture, governmental structures, and criminal justice to identify the major components of the criminal justice system in Scotland, comprehend the similarities and differences in how Scotland and the US organize and administer their justice systems, to include discerning critical issues the Scottish criminal justice system is confronting. Pre-departure class meetings are prerequisite to the study abroad component and will provide program preparation and outline assignments and responsibilities. A post-trip class meeting will focus on reflection and presentation. Eligibility Requirements: Students must be approved by the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice in order to participate in this program and should refer to information provided by Dr. Crow regarding program fees and expenses, deadlines, and pre-departure requirements. Other requirements include UWF minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.25 or minimum graduate GPA of 3.0. Students majors eligible to apply include: Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, Political Science, Social Work, Psychology, History, International Studies, or those pursuing a minor in Criminal Justice. Students must register for the Summer 2017 course CCJ4931/CCJ5990 Crime and Justice in Scotland. Housing: Edinburgh Napier University Dormitories.
