Spanish Language and Culture in Salamanca Location: Salamanca, Spain Duration: May 9, 2014 to May 31, 2014 Focus: Spanish Language and Culture Program Director: Laura Arguea, Instructor, Department of English and World Languages, UWF. 3-5 UWF Credits for Intensive Language Abroad Interested students must be in Junior status i.e. having earned 60 credits or more at UWF and with a 3.0 GPA Program Overview Departure date for the program is Friday, May 9, 2014. The program begins in Spain on May 10, 2014. The program ends on May 30, 2014 and students return to the US on May 31, 2014. The program is open to degree-seeking UWF students. UWF in Spain will offer you multiple opportunities to use Spanish in your everyday life, and involve you in cultural activities. Limited spaces available. UWF in Spain Application Process Students apply online and submit the required forms. After submitting the Essay online, each student must schedule an appointment with the Program Director, Laura Arguea, for an interview as part of the application process. You will receive a letter, via email, regarding the status of your academic application. Within 7 days of acceptance to the program, students will need to deposit $300.00 to the UWF in Spain account (Cashiers office), to reserve their place. Reservations are subject to availability. Once students are admitted to the program, they will need to complete all study abroad enrollment requirements online by the deadlines set by the UWF Office of Diversity and International Education and Programs (ODIEP), as well as the requirements and forms set by the host institution. Do not book flights until you are officially accepted to the program, and complete the ODIEP paperwork. Also, transfers to and from Salamanca will require specific times for arrival and departure from Barajas. Host City Salamanca is a dynamic and intimate city that invites you to immerse yourself into one of the most beautiful places in the world to learn Spanish while living the Spanish way. Salamanca is the home of the oldest University in Spain, the prestigious University of Salamanca. The city is a must see for all of us, since it has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Housing Students will stay with local families. The families will provide three meals a day. Financial Matters The Department of English and World Languages will collect the Program fee of $1800.00 for the "UWF in Spain" program ($300 deposit non-refundable). The program fee must be paid in full by March 1, 2014. A group flight will be arranged for the students, but students will pay the flight cost directly to the travel agency. The flight will be part of a suggested itinerary which begins in Pensacola. Students departing from a different city have the option to join the group for the International flight to Madrid. Students not travelling on the group flight will be responsible for their own transportation to Salamanca to arrive by the designated arrival date and time. Do not book flights until you are officially accepted to the program, and complete the ODIEP paperwork. Also, transfers to and from Salamanca will require specific times for arrival and departure from Barajas. In addition to the fees paid to the department for the program and the flight expense paid to the travel agency, students are registered for three to five credits of Spanish-language at UWF. The cost of the course credit will depend on student residency status. Students can earn 3-5 credits as part of the UWF in Spain Program. One credit hour at the in-state tuition rate is $211.87 One credit hour for out-of-state residents is $641.26. Tuition is paid on the summer 2014 payment schedule for Term B courses. Students are encouraged to have $300-$700 for personal spending money if they plan to take any tours or visit locations not included in the program fees. Cancellation and Refund Policy Cancellation must be submitted in writing, submitted in-person to Laura Arguea at Building 50, Room 227. $300.00 non-refundable deposit is required upon approval for this program. Cancellation fee of $300.00 will be charged if students cancel after March 1, 2014. Additional charges paid on the student's behalf are not recoverable. Cancellations after April 1 will receive no refund. Students may choose to purchase trip cancellation insurance for flight and other expenses not paid to UWF.
