Scholarships for Study Abroad

UWF Foundation Study Abroad Scholarship offers study abroad scholarships based on financial need, statement of purpose and academic achievement.  Students applying for the Foundation Study Abroad Scholarship must have completed the application process for their chosen program of study by the Scholarship Application Deadline of February 23, 2012.  Scholarship applicants who have not completed a program application will not be considered. The UWF Foundation Study Abroad Scholarship is open to students applying to any study abroad location for Summer 2012, Fall 2012, and Spring 2013. UWF College of Business (COB) Travel Grant is available to COB majors only. Applicants must be approved for their selected exchange program and provide required documents. COB students can find more information about this resource through their COB academic advisor.

The Institute of International Education (IIE) administers several scholarship programs for study abroad. www.iie.org

  • Freeman-ASIA Offers scholarships for U.S. undergraduates with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.
  • Boren Awards for International Study Supports graduate and undergraduate students studying languages, cultures and world areas critical to U.S. interests.
  • Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program Provides awards for U.S. undergrads who are receiving Federal Pell Grants to study abroad.
  • Fulbright The Fulbright Program, the U.S. Government's flagship international exchange program, is administered by IIE.

The US-Japan Bridging Foundation awards scholarships to assist students with travel and living expenses while studying abroad in Japan. Awards are for undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents: www.colorado.edu/ealc/atj/Bridging/scholarships.html

The Critical Language Scholarship Program is part of the National Security Language Initiative (NSLI), a U.S. government interagency effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. http://www.clscholarship.org/

Foundation for Global Scholars offers four scholarship options for US or Canadian citizen students enrolled in a North American college or university where transfer credit from an academic program abroad will be applied to your degree being earned.  http://foundationforglobalscholars.org/

DAAD – German Academic Exchange Service offers a variety of scholarship and funding programs for undergraduate and graudate students. Funding is available through study, internship, and research programs administered by DAAD. http://www.daad.org/

Monbukagakusho Scholarship, sponsored by the Japanese Government Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, enables foreign students from 160 countries to study Japanese language and culture at the undergraduate level, to train in methods of teaching Japanese as a foreign language, and to research a broad range of topics at the graduate level in Japanese universities. http://www.atlanta.us.emb-japan.go.jp/monbusho.html

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi awards Study Abroad Grants designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Thirty-eight $1,000 grants are awarded each year. www.phikappaphi.org

Fund for Education Abroad offers support for US citizen or permanent resident of the US; currently enrolled as an undergraduate; applying for credit bearing study abroad program for a minimum of 4 weeks; committed to supporting education abroad at his/her campus community through work with the FEA and UWF International staff upon return. http://www.fundforeducationabroad.com/applicants/

John T. Petters Study Abroad Scholarship offers awards for programs with international business focus, US citizens. http://www.johntpettersfoundation.org/

Lingnan University offers overseas student scholarships for continuing degree studies in Hong Kong. http://uwf.edu/intered/studyabroad/Leaflet_2011_12.pdf

GO! Overseas is proud to support international education through scholarships available to students participating in study abroad programs. Scholarships are awarded each year. The scholarship is awarded based on the creativity and analytical thinking displayed through writing samples and/or video submissions. http://www.gooverseas.com/study-abroad/

Diversity Abroad Network Scholarship, in partnership with STA Travel, offers $750 summer travel scholarships to offset the cost of travel to study abroad host country. Economically disadvantaged students, community college, African-American/Black, Asian, Hispanic/Latino, Multiracial/ethnic or Indigenous/Native-American and first generation undergraduate students are strongly encouraged to apply. Students must have a 3.0 GPA and be willing to share their experiences abroad with the DiversityAbroad.com community via blogs (at least once a week), article submission (one or two article required depending on length of study abroad program) and participate in the DiversityAbroad.com Discussion Boards. http://www.diversitynetwork.org/scholarships
