Application Procedures:
Standard UWF Study Abroad Application Procedures apply. Mikkeli requires an official transcript for exchange application. Students can find additional details about application to Mikkeli in the Exchange Students Application Details section of the Mikkeli International Office Website. We use an Online Application System for incoming exchange students. We kindly ask you to fill in the requested information and submit the application to us.

Costs / Expenses:
UWF provides a list of Quick Cost Facts for each location. Additional information about estimated expenses can be found in the Practical Information section of the Mikkeli International Office website.
*Tuition is paid to UWF and UWF Credit is received for exchanges.

Accommodation:
Mikkeli Student Housing Ltd (MOAS) is the easiest way to find accommodation for your exchange period. You can submit an application at MOAS website www.moas.fi. There is usually quite a long waiting list for apartments in autumn because of large number of new students in town. MOAS does its best to arrange an apartment for as many students as possible.
Be sure to write your email address correctly in the application form because MOAS will send you an email when they have an apartment reserved for you. The email also includes instructions (IBAN and Bic) for paying the deposit fee. You have approximately one week time to confirm the reservation to MOAS and to pay the deposit fee. Without a reply, you will lose the reserved apartment and your application will not be on the waiting list anymore.
You need to apply for the accommodation at least two months prior to your exchange period!

Rent
The amount of rent varies depending on the location and size of the apartment. The rents for shared apartments are app. from 300 € /month and for single-room apartments from 380 €/month. Electricity is usually included in the rent. If the electricity is not included in the rent the tenant pays for the electricity to the local electric company.
Exchange students to Mikkeli can view additional details in the Accommodation section of the Mikkeli International Office website.

Health Care Information:
All foreign students must have a sufficient health insurance while studying at Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences. Therefore, you should purchase an insurance policy before leaving your home country.
Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences requires that all incoming exchange students have a valid personal (travel) insurance policy from an internationally recognised insurance company for the duration of their stay in Finland. This insurance should cover all costs related to treatment of sudden illness, accidents and accidental death. Students must present proof of the valid insurance when registering.
An insurance policy covering you outside the United States enables you to use private health services, which is a quick and convenient way of getting an appointment. You will also need to have a sufficient diphtheria and tetanus vaccination cover. Health care students also need additional vaccinations.
Having comprehensive health insurance cover is a requirement for residence permit for non-EU citizens. A student must have insurance cover already when applying for a residence permit as without it a residence permit cannot be granted. Further information is available from the Finnish Immigration Service www.migri.fi.

Residence permit Information:
All students studying for semester or year in Finland must apply for a residence permit at least 12 weeks prior to the start of their program at Mikkeli. Application is to be made through the Consulate General of Finland in New York, NY. For further details of the application process and items needed, please visit Residence

Permits for Students
http://www.migri.fi/studying_in_finland
Students from non-EU/EEA and non-Nordic countries need a residence permit to enter Finland. Obtaining the required permits is at student's own responsibility. Submit your application as soon as you have received an acceptance letter from Mikkeli UAS. The application should be submitted to a Finnish embassy in your home country or in a country in which you are legally residing. If Finland does not have an embassy in your country, submit your application to a Finnish embassy closest to you. You have to wait for the decision abroad. You will receive the decision through the embassy at which you submitted your application. A residence permit for studies is granted primarily for one year at a time. Students whose studies last less than one year can be granted a shorter permit. Make sure your passport is valid for a minimum of one year. If your studies last less than one year, your passport has to be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Finland.
