Program Description

Summer Semester in Japan
Location: Tokyo, Japan
Duration: 4 weeks July-August 2015
Posted program dates may change 2-3 days at the start or end of the program.
Focus: Japanese Culture and Society - Open to all majors
Host Institution: Jikei Technical College Group
6 UWF Credits

Eligibility:
Minimum GPA of 2.8
Undergraduate degree-seeking student
No previous Japanese language study required to apply.

Curriculum:
Students will be required to enroll in 6 credit hours at UWF.
2 courses, each 3 credits.

Introduction to Modern Japan – 3 sch
This course is an introduction to modern Japan and its world role drawing upon insights provided by the social and behavioral sciences. Emphasis is placed upon social change in Japan, especially globalization. Topics include Japanese history, religion and cultural beliefs, families, social class, educational system, work organization, demographic changes, and geopolitical dynamics. At the end of the course, students will be able to describe the philosophical foundations of Japanese culture, the various forms of contemporary Japanese social institutions, and major social trends in Japan, including globalization.

Direct Study - Topics on Japan - 3 credits

Excursions and Cultural Opportunities
Students will participate in course related field trips, local cultural events, and visits to cultural and historical sites in and around the Tokyo area. They will also have an opportunity to interact with Japanese students attending the Jikei host school.

Special application is required for this program. Five participants are chosen from eligible applicants.
Students will be required to submit an application essay and recommendation from UWF faculty member or academic advisor using the online application system.

Applicants chosen to participate receive financial assistance for Flight and Accommodation for the six week program and a week tour of Japan during the program.

Paying Program Fee:
$500 deposit due by April 15.
Remaining $500 due by July 2.
